Environment Desk Ms Lynne James
Our Environmental Columnist Ms Lynne James has an amazing lifelong passion for the Zimbabwean wilderness, all our unbelievable National Parks with their spectacular space, beauty, tranquility and wildlife. And from this grows her concern for the City's environment.
Her passion for the city and it’s environment saw her spear heading a project called Shandira Mutare in 2009 which saw residents of the City of Mutare coming together from all walks of life to clean the city. This was no doubt a huge success, which culminated in city council partnering with various business people to provide service delivery etc to the city and the rest is history.
Each week she will take time out of her busy schedule to highlight areas of interest, areas of concern as well as give us her weekly antidote on how to treat our amazing environment like the living organism it is.
KEEP MUTARE CLEAN – KEEP MUTARE GREEN.
No doubt you will have noticed the increasing number of massive billboards defacing the City? Whilst advertising has become an integral part of our lives, when it gets to be this invasive it can negatively impact on our environment and we need to take stock and ask what the benefits of it are, other than to the advertiser themselves. How much does the City benefit from such advertising and is it really worth it? What responsibility does the advertiser have to the public? If you have an opinion on this please write in and get it heard.
And talking about responsibility, we have an appeal to our Mutare motorists, particularly those drivers and their passengers who beetle around the City, eating fast food and drinking fast drinks, only to hurl the remains ….. polystyrene, paper packaging, plastic bags, cans, bottles … out of their windows when they are finished! Please motorists, work with us on our KEEP MUTARE CLEAN campaign and dispose of your rubbish responsibly.
On a more positive note please remember that the Municipal Nursery has a variety of plants for sale, and is still in the process of establishing an indigenous tree nursery. Mr. Friday Sahondo will welcome any indigenous seed donations towards this. We are also still looking for Aloes of any kind – please just remember that it is illegal to collect from the bush – but we would greatly appreciate your cuttings.
If you have environmental concerns or ideas, please make contact via the e mail address on this Bulletin. We value your input.
