The democratically elected Council of Mutare, representing the residents and stakeholders of the City, is committed to conducting all Council business in a transparent and accountable manner with full public disclosure. In order to maximize development potential, attract donor assistance and partnerships and combat corruption, the Council is seeking to raise funds for an in-depth professional audit of Municipal activities. Council is appealing to stakeholders and other interested parties to assist with financial contributions in order that the activities of Council can be widely scrutinized. Appropriate measures will be taken to correct the lack of accountability that still prevails and which is of concern to Council and residents alike. This objective should be achieved without depriving the City of public funds required for service delivery.

 

The extent and ultimate success of the audit will depend on the funds raised. As the Mayor of the City, I am appealing to all stakeholders to contribute no matter how small the amount. Every contribution counts. The audit findings will be made public and the full sum raised accounted for in press advertisements and public meetings. A separate bank account has been opened by Kingdom Bank Mutare Branch; City of Mutare Donor Funds Account number 32108563.

 

Council has resolved to source quotes from at least three professional accounting firms to achieve this end.

 

The priorities are; a donor funds audit with report to contributing donors, a forensic financial audit of a specific area of concern to Council, an audit of land sales and procedures and a human resources audit. If we can raise US$ 200 000 from this appeal the City will establish a strong platform of reform which will enable Council to serve Residents and Partners with renewed integrity.

MANICA FEST 2010

Host: Africa University (A united Methodist Related Institution)

This is Africa University’s 6th Annual International Festival of the Arts & Culture

Date:   22 to 27 March 2010

Brief Background

It is part of a tradition, now in its sixth year, designated to celebrate the university’s uniquely pan-African and international outlook in collaboration with the community and residents  of the City if Mutare and beyond. The festival, which is being organized by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, usually takes place over 3 to 5 days and this year is no exception.

Manica fest 2010

This year’s festival will be held over 5 days in and around the city of Mutare, Zimbabwe. It will feature a variety of art forms, performances, academic seminars and practical skills workshops. Art forms to be featured at the festival will include the following: sculpture and ceramics, fine art, drama and theatre, comedy, music, song and dance, poetry and film. The academic activities will include literary readings, book launch, practical skills workshops and an academic seminar

Participants

The festival makes a special effort to invite and select participants from three groups:-

Community and International artists – who play a key role in promoting connectedness among communities and internationally through displaying their creativity and promoting entrepreneurship.

Youth – whose creativity and energy must be channeled and harvested to promote their positive social integration; and

Educational and Training Institutions – which can have a major positive effect in building intellectual and practical artistic knowledge, skills and talent.

School and Community Arts programme

The 2010 festival will mark the launch of their ‘school and community arts programme’ at Africa University. The programme will engage arts and humanities staff and students in community outreach projects such as – building or strengthening choral groups in schools, promoting community philanthropy support through the arts, strengthening inter-schools arts competitions (theatre, choral, poetry, creative writing, traditional dance, and so on), designing innovative fundraising activities by arts and for the arts and culture heritage programmes and the like.

Last year the event hosted the following:-

Poetry slam and Book launch , Workshops on Choral Music and Adjudication, Script writing and Craft. There was a theatre night, also a peace parade through the centre of town and a closing gala, all this over and above each day’s activities.

The festival is attended by people all over the world and from all walks of life. It attracts all age groups depending on the different events being held. It’s a casual and arty affair for the whole family.

OPERATION OF HOPE

The all volunteer surgical team, OPERATION OF HOPE will once again be returning to St. Anne’s Hospital, Harare, Zimbabwe this April, 2010 to take care of as many babies, children and adults that suffer from cleft lip and cleft palate conditions.

All candidates must be in good health-no fevers, colds etc. and babies must be at least 3 months old.

All surgeries, medications, hospital and surgical fees are free! There is no cost to the patient if they are selected for surgery.

 

Screening Day is Sunday, April 11th, 2010

Beginning at 8.30am at St. Anne’s Hospital in Harare.

Surgery is scheduled for the following 2 weeks, April 12-16 and April 19-22nd, 2010.

 

Please feel free to distribute this information to as many churches, schools, pharmacies, family friends or colleagues. Our goal is to help as many people as we can in these 2 weeks. But it is important to get to the hospital for screening day on Sunday, April 11th by 8.30am.
