Shandira Zimbabwe
A voluntary clean up programme currently ongoing in all wards in Mutare, Shandira Zimbabwe is aimed at cleaning up the environment and instilling in members of the community a sense of responsibility for the upkeep of their areas.
The programme is progressing well in ward 16 and the workdays have been reduced to three times a week-Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
Already, communities in ward 16 are much cleaner with rubbish heaps that used to be an eyesore now a thing of the past.
In ward 16 there are currently 500 people, divided into three groups, who are taking part in the initiative.
The organisation has also provided soccer and netball balls for recreational purposes.
Community members are also demonstrating their newfound responsibility for their area in the way people who throw away litter indiscriminately are strongly reprimanded and punished.
The programme is ongoing and people in ward 16 meet every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and work for two hours each day. BACK
